Kota Kinabalu, local restaurant, 'Grill fish'


Out of the effort to find a decent local restaurant in Kota Kinabalu, in the end, I've found it!

'Grill fish', the astonishing place for tourists

beloved place for locals but also perfect for touritst

Finally we've been fed up with too-pricey but normal hotel resort food. So I googled up and found a decent place which has nice reviews. They say, it is really loved by locals and the price is also reasonable. 

The only drawback is that they don't serve crabs and booze. But don't worry I will give you some tips for you later on. 




1. Where is the restaurant 'Grill fish' located?



The restaurant is located in Harbour city building. But I recommend to pin on the destination of Halimah as below pictures, since if you check the grill fish restaurant on Grab app, the driver need to get into Harbour city and it requres parking fee which will be charged to you.

If you get off here in front of Halimah restaurant, you can go to this way. Just follow the way that has some plastic tables. At the end of the way, you'll find our destination Grill fish restaurant.

Just in case, this is the backside of the restaurant that I took a picture of when I left. Definitely this is the brightest and most crowded place around there, I bet you won't miss it.

There were a full of local people who enjoyed weekend eat-out with friends and family. The long tables were reserved for them. 😮




2. the menus and price

Unfortunately, there is no picture of menu, because it was chaos to order. I ordered Udang Butter (fried prawn), Ikan Rasa (Fish), Sotong Goreng (Fried Squid), and rice. For drinks, we ordered Cola and lemon tea. But the cola was sold out so changed to Apple carrot juice.

Look at this check. In spite that we've ordered 3 main dishes and 2 drinks, it's only 124 RM. About 30 dollars. Cool.

If order is taken, they give you this table number. Once your food is ready, they serve them to your table. All you need to do is wash your hand and wait at the table. (There is a water tab for washing hands.)

Drinks were served. The lemon iced tea was normal as expected, but the carrot juice was amazing! It didn't taste of carrot at all, rather sweet and refreshing. For drnks, I strongly recommend this one.

Next to us, there were 5 girls. It seemed to be a girls' night-out. One of them was talking to others about me surprised at a small beetle at hands-wash spot. Yes, I'm from a city, girls.

While waiting for food, I missed the air-conditioner at hotel so bad. It was so humid and hot with steamy heat of tropical weather.

But the weather didn't stop me from addtional order for seafood Tom Yam. The picture of it looked so tempting and look at the price. How would I not try it? 





3. a series of wonder

Oh,,no,,,, the Ikan(fish) we chose was the head of fish. It had looked so weird if it was not covered with the sauce.

The thickness of fish was surprising. We asked the smallest one, but they said only middle size was available. It turned out only this one menu was way enough for two of us.

The sauce was not spicy at all but sweet and sticky. I was eager to have a swig of beer with this.

Sotong Goreng was served. This fried squid was spicy! quite spicy enough not to finish it.

The amount of food is big enough, so if you come here with 3 people, only 2 main menu is enough to enjoy.

Wowwwww! This was the picture which drew me to this restaurant. The visual was so overwhelming. Although it is called Udang Butter, it didn't taste of butter at all. Haha. The small prawn was full of my mouth when I put it in.

I was so wondering what the topping was. It looks like fluffy hay, doesn't it? Even though I tried some of it in my mouth, I still couldn't guess what it was. What do you think it is?

The secret topping was EGG!!! Can you believe it? One of the reader of my blog let me know it is a egg yolk. But still cannot believe it. How does egg yolk have a texture like this? Fried? 





Tom-Yam


Tom Yam was here!! This soup was not that sour but sweet and rich. Various seafood made deep, rich flavour.

If you had drunk the day before, this was the perfect hang-over soup for you! What a yummy soup!

Even this soup has big shrimps, but the soup is best of best. You'll want some rice after slurping one time. 

With this soup, we finalized our hugh meal at Grill fish. 




One small tip at Grill fish

Since this restaurant is outdoor, it doesn't provide any cooling system. If you try Tom Yam, you better have it on the place. But if you just wanna try some signature menus like Udang (Prawns) & Sotong (Squids), I recommend to-go those dishes and grab some beer at nearby convenience store, then go back to hotel for further drinks.

Near the restaurant, there is a convenience store called Orange, and they provide some booze which you would like to try. Even some Korean Soju as well. 

It might a much better idea to enjoy the food under AC.
